Ah..finally Ubuntu 12.10 was released. For you who was already downloaded and install it, SOT will give you 12 things you’d better do after installing Ubuntu 12.10:
1. update check
Although Ubuntu 12.10 had just released and fresh, but it didn’t mean there would be no more update or maintenance. Probably there are already some updates done in the beginning of their releases.
Actually, Ubuntu would be automatically gave information if there is an update once in a few days. But for this first day, you should do it manually. You just have to open Dash and searched for Software Updater.
2. Install Ubuntu Restricted Extras
This is a software which better have by all Ubuntu users. In this Ubuntu Restricted Extras there is already provided various media codec like MP3, AVI, MPEG, etc. It would make you able to play video and music via Ubutu without any problems. Besides, there are also various important plugin like Java and Flash, so that you would be able to enjoy all visited-website features. There’s also various Microsoft’s fonts installed in Ubuntu.
To install this Ubuntu Restricted Extras, you’d just have to find it via Ubuntu Software Center and install from there.
3. Insert Online account Details
One of the latest feature in Ubuntu 12.10 is synchronization with various online account like Facebook, Twitter, Flickr, Google, etc. in order to use those features, you should insert the detail of each your online account first.
How to do it is, by opening System Settings > Online Accounts.
just insert online account you want to connect with Ubuntu 12.10.
4. Integrating Web Apps
Other new features in Ubuntu 12.10 is integration of popular web apps via launcher. For example, you often visited YouTube or Facebook, you can put their shortcut in Ubuntu launcher. To do it, you’d just have to visit the site, when there’s a notification, you can directly select install.
5. installing Driver
Ubuntu 12.10 actually already supported various hardware type. But if you want to maximize your computer hardware performance, try to install driver via additional driver tab. You’d just have to open System Settings > Software Sources > Additional Drivers.
6. Uninstalling or Turning Shopping Lens Off
Shopping lens is Amazon commercial which was provided in Dash by Canonical. many people felt that this “more suggestions” quite disturbing, related with privacy, etc. that’s why you can turn Shopping lens off via Software Center.
7. Ubuntu One synchronization
Have you found out about Ubuntu One ? SOT often discussed it here. Ubuntu One is a cloud storage from Canonical which has became default Cloud storage of ubuntu. You can enjoy 5GB storage for free. To use it, feel free to login to your Ubuntu One account via icon on Launcher. If you haven’t had the account, you can register here.
8. Install Media Player
for media player, it’s good to use application you love. But SOT stayed using VC media player to play video. You can install VLC Media Player easily from software center.
For music player, SOT always use Audacious which has the same display as Winamp. This Audacious can also be installed from software center.
9. Install Internet application
There are so many internet application you can install as you need. But basic applications which SOT used to install are Thunderbird (email client), Pidgin (instant messenger), Skype (instant messenger), and Chromium (Browser). All of them can be installed easily via software center.
10. Install Aplikasi Tweak Dasar
There were some tweak application you can install in Ubuntu. SOT’s favorite is Ubuntu Tweak which you can install by typing this commands in terminal:
sudo add-apt-repository ppa:tualatrix/ppa
sudo apt-get update
sudo apt-get install ubuntu-tweak
Unfortunately, Ubuntu Tweak developer had decided not to continue this software development. Hiks.
The solution: you can use MyUnity, however, recently MyUnity is still unavailable in Ubuntu 12.10.
There’s another tweak advanced application you can install, which is CompizConfig Setting Manager which you can install via software center.
11. Install other “important” applications
Surely these ‘important’ applications are relative for each user. But here SOT would give some important applications list which almost all needed by SOT, even in Ubuntu:
7Zip is so important to do archive and file extract. Don’t forget when installing from Software Center, you should tick on Non-Free Rar Module .
this is an image editor application for Photoshop. You can install it via Software Center.
This is an application to take photo or video from webcam. You can install it via Software Center.
this virtual Software is so important for SOT. Often SOT use it to install various OS and various software to be reviewed here. VirtualBox can be installed via software center.
If you searched for cool screenshot taker for Ubuntu, use shutter! You can use this application to take screenshot, add various things (arrows, texts, etc), add watermark, etc. SOT used Shutter to take screenshot when creating tutorial.
12. Have Fun!
Yup.. the final step after installing Ubuntu 12.10 is: have fun! There are so many new features, new applications, and also various ‘games’. You probably able to try Facebook update status from Gwibber, chatting from Empathy, editing here and there, etc. there’s always a new fun in every version of new Ubuntu. So, have fun!
